Chapter 17

o0o

B y mid-morning of the day Harry Bradford rode out of town, Ollie Thompson’s annoyance with Harry grew. The trouble Ollie found himself dealing with because of Harry’s request to watch out for the Schoenfeld woman billowed up and around him like the dust kicked up by a thousand head of longhorns on a long drive. Nothing would give him greater satisfaction than to punch the man out cold. What a dirty, rotten trick! He was even angrier at himself for agreeing to do it. If what had taken place the last few hours continued for the next week, Ollie knew he would be stark raving loco by the time Harry returned.

He also felt put-out Harry had avoided telling him that he was going after the woman’s brother...a man who had a price on his head.

His ordeal started shortly after Harry left. As he walked down the street on his way to Evelene’s Bakery for sweet rolls and coffee for breakfast, Jimmy, the telegraph operator, hopped off the boardwalk and sidled up next to him. Jimmy was far from being one of Ollie’s favorite people. However, as part of his deputy marshal duties, he felt it necessary to keep his opinions about townspeople to himself. “Morning, Jimmy.”

“Morning back at ya. Hey, Ollie, what did that Nathan Schoenfeld do to get a price on his head? You know who I mean, the one that Harry lit out after this morning. Five hundred dollars!” Jimmy whistled as he turned his gaze forward and shook his head. “Must of killed someone to draw that kind of reward offer, don’t ya think?” Keeping pace with Ollie, he returned his gaze to Ollie’s profile.

“How’d you hear about Nathan Schoenfeld?” Ollie glanced at Jimmy, then he returned his gaze forward. Guessing that might be the real name of the Schoenfeld woman’s brother, he was not really surprised he was a wanted man. The previous day, after he read the telegram the woman showed him, Ollie had suspected her brother was trying to hide from something. Turned out he was using a false name. Yet, when Ollie had checked the wanted posters after Harry left the office, he hadn’t seen anything for either name. If he had, he would have remembered.

“Harry sent a telegram to Indianapolis to make sure they still were offering the same money as on the reward poster. He got an answer back fast as can be. Yep! The reward’s still good, as long as he gets the man back to Indianapolis alive and in one piece. Must be that woman’s brother she’s been looking for, don’t ya think?”

So, that’s what Harry was up to—and made a point to keep it from me. His chest heaved as he inhaled more deeply. He felt his heart begin to pump blood faster through his veins. Harry had refused to tell Ollie what he planned. Here, Jimmy knew all about it. “Harry didn’t say nothing.”

“Really?” Jimmy’s surprise was genuine. “Well, he did tell me more than once not to go saying anything to anybody.
